What does 2020 have in store for the events industry? Well, it’s a good thing you stopped by because we have some insights! There’s no denying that the evolution of event tech is still high on the agenda but what about the new focus on sustainability? As we settle in to a brand new decade, we bring you a list of the top event trends for 2020.
Event Trends in 2020: Innovative, tech-enabled venues
More often than not, event planners now favour dynamic and flexible venues who can provide all the necessary services in one place. Not only is this cost-effective for the client but it also saves valuable resources on both sides. If you haven’t already, consider integrating services such as catering or in-house team building solutions to help drive event revenue. Using tech to support events is another great way to stay ahead of the curve in 2020 and still provide high-quality service. Other important factors (for more traditional or remote venues) are modern must-haves such as reliable (preferably free) WIFI and AV set up.
Sustainability in events
Sustainability in events is hardly new however it’s a focus that will only continue to evolve (and grow) across the industry in 2020. Whether you’re a planner or venue, it’s important to consider environmentally friendly options such as paperless registrations, biodegradable packaging and banning single-use plastics at your events. Making these changes will not only have a positive impact on your attendees but it will also drive more change in reducing our carbon footprint.
Mental health & well-being
Mental health awareness and ‘digital detoxing’ are here to stay for 2020. Despite huge leaps forward in technology and smart devices, we are still learning when it comes to mental health issues and well-being, particularly in the workplace. Our Mental Health in the Workplace Survey revealed that 62% of employees surveyed said they had taken a day off work in the last year due to anxiety, depression or stress. To combat this, phone-free zones are now starting to appear at certain events to encourage attendees to focus and interact more. Meanwhile, discussions and panels about wellness and mindfulness are more commonplace than ever before (thumbs up to that)!
Quirky venues
Event location trends for 2020 are said to move even further away from traditional settings and into more quirky venues. Nowadays there are so many options available when it comes to unique venues (we’re talking warehouses, converted barns, cinemas, vaults and more.) Long gone are the days where conference rooms and auditoriums were the industry norm. With most planners on the lookout for a unique event experience, now is the time for venues to maximise their space by hosting events and activities.
Mobile apps on the rise
This trend shows no signs of slowing down. A recent report revealed that the number of event apps created has increased by 83% since 2017. However, it’s not just the apps that are picking up pace. 2020 will also see the introduction of 5G networks and advancements in augmented reality and virtual reality. With app developments now handling everything from e-tickets, registrations and itineraries, to team building activities and digital business cards, it’s definitely a space worth watching and investing in.
